The EF400mm f/4 DO IS II USM lens has large glass elements susceptible to heat expansion. The white lens barrel reflects the rays of the sun and helps to keep the elements cool. The smaller elements of the EF16-35mm f/4L IS USM lens are less affected by heat, so a black lens barrel is suitable.

Most EF lenses have black barrels, but a few are white (actually a light grey or beige). The white lenses are all large super-telephotos. There is a good reason for this.

Lenses contain glass elements. These expand with heat. This is not usually a problem with compact lenses − the amount of expansion is small. But large lenses contain large elements and here expansion can bring a lens close to the limits of its design tolerances. A white surface reflects sunlight, helping to keep the lens cooler.

Incidentally, you will find that the manual focusing action of some black lenses allows focusing past its infinity setting (sometimes called over-focusing). This is also to allow for expansion. If the lens is used in hot conditions, infinity focusing will be closer to the end of the travel.

대부분의 EF 렌즈들은 검은 경통을 채용하고 있으나 개중 몇몇은 하얗습니다(엄밀히는 연회색 혹은 베이지색). 이 하얀 렌즈들은 전부 커다란 초망원 렌즈들이고 거기에는 그럴만한 근거가 있습니다.

렌즈들은 유리로 구성되어 있습니다. 그리고 이것들은 열에 의해 팽창합니다. 팽창의 정도가 크지 않은 작은 렌즈에서는 대게 별 문젯거리가 아니지만 큰 구성물을 지닌 큰 렌즈들에는 그 팽창의 정도가 렌즈 설계상의 한계에까지 달할 수 있습니다. 이에 하얀 표면은 태양광을 반사시키고 내부의 온도를 유지하는 데 도움을 줍니다.

그런 와중에 몇몇 검은 렌즈들의 수동 포커싱 조작 시 무한대 구간을 넘어설 수 있는 것(Over-focusing이라 부르기도 합니다)을 발견할 수 있습니다. 이 또한 팽창을 감안한 것이며 더운 환경에서 렌즈를 사용할 때 무한대 초점은 허용 범위의 한계에 근접하게 될 것입니다.

 

 

 

작은 렌즈에 들어가는 렌즈의 경통은 렌즈 자체가 팽창하여도 어느정도 열팽창에 의한 설계상의 한계를 버틸 수 있으나,

망원렌즈에 사용되는 대물렌즈, 커다란 렌즈들은 열팽창시 경통이 버티기 어려운 구조가 있기 때문에 햇볕으로 인한 열팽창을 최소화 시키기 위해 흰색으로 도색, 도장을 한 것이다. 작은 렌즈들은 굳이 흰색으로 도색할 필요가 없다.
